IOE Probability and Statistics Question Pattern

This page is made after going through the recent new-syllabus question papers like Chaitra 2082 and Bhadra 2082, and observing how the questions are actually being asked. After checking everything together, a clear question-wise pattern can be seen.

This pattern is not random.

We looked at the recent papers and how the syllabus is being followed in exams. Most of the questions are coming in a fixed structure. If you understand this structure, you do not have to study everything blindly.

Question-wise Pattern Students Should Expect

Q1. Descriptive Statistics

Mean, standard deviation, variance, quartiles, boxplot, histogram, scatter plot or comparison between data sets. Interpretation is also important.

Q2. Probability and Bayes

Basic probability, total probability and Bayes theorem. Usually given in a real-life situation like machines, suppliers, defects or selection.

Q3. Random Variable

Discrete or continuous random variable. They may ask to find \( k \), mean, variance or probability.

Q4. Binomial or Poisson

Discrete distribution question. Exact, at least and at most type probability questions are very common.

Q5. Normal Distribution or Sampling

Normal distribution using \( z \), probability and percentage type questions. Sometimes sampling distribution or CLT can appear.

Q6. Estimation

Point estimation, confidence interval for mean or sample size. Usually direct if the formula is clear.

Q7. Hypothesis Testing Theory

Steps of hypothesis testing, Type I error, Type II error and general procedure of testing.

Q8. Testing of Mean

Single mean, two means, paired \( t \)-test or one-way ANOVA. This is one of the most important numerical testing areas.

Q9. Chi-square or ANOVA

Goodness of fit, independence test or ANOVA style question. Chi-square tables and expected frequencies must be handled properly.

Q10. Correlation

Correlation coefficient \( r \), coefficient of determination, testing of correlation, scatter plot or effect of outlier.

Q11. Regression

Simple regression equation, regression coefficient and prediction. The question may also include a short theory part.

Q12. Quality Control

\( \bar{X} \)-chart, R-chart or P-chart. Find control limits, plot points and comment whether the process is under control.

Important Notes Before You Prepare

  • Proportion testing, one sample and two sample, is not something students should spend deep time mastering.
  • ANOVA belongs to the testing area, so it should be prepared properly.
  • Percentile questions are not the focus in this pattern.
  • Multiple correlation and partial correlation should not be mixed with simple correlation preparation.
Calculator note: Calculators are allowed, and students may write direct answers. But if the formula used for mean, standard deviation, correlation or regression coefficient is not mentioned, marks can be lost.
